Back Pain : Can Chiropractic Adjustment Help?

Ravi Jain • March 28, 2019

Back pain is one of the most common ailments that people all over the world face at some point in life. At times, the pain can become severe and chronic, thus disrupting a person’s daily activities.

Doctors suggest that it could be the result of our lifestyle habits, our sitting and standing posture, and the lack of physical activity in our lives.

The lower back is a major target for pain caused by mechanical stress and strain, which is a result of the spine supporting the entire upper body weight. With age, the discs between the vertebrae are subject to wear and tear, causing injury and even herniated discs.

People with back pain should be concerned and seek medical advice if they experience any of the following:

  • Pain in the back for more than six weeks
  • Pain that gets worse and shows no signs of improvement
  • Being younger than 22 or 55
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs because of the back pain

Treatment for Back Pain

There are medications, ointments and natural supplements that can help with back pain during the initial stages. However, when the problem becomes chronic, a more intensive outlook for treatment should be sought. Chiropractic care can work wonders for back pain. Though not many people are convinced that chiropractic adjustment is an effective treatment, the results indicate otherwise.

According to a study  by Christine M. Goertz, DC, Ph.D., a chiropractor with the Spine Institute for Quality in Iowa, chiropractic care combined with traditional medicine had better pain relief results. In another 2016 study, Goertz stated that 33 percent of the subjects believed chiropractic care was the safest method and 29 percent found it more effective than pain medication in contrast to 12 percent of the subjects who preferred pain medications.

What Is Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a non-surgical procedure that is dedicated to remedying any condition related to the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Generally, chiropractic adjustment in the case of low-back pain will involve spinal manipulation and alignment that can assist a person in the management of pain while also activating the body’s self-healing abilities.

Chiropractic adjustment for back pain is determined by a chiropractor only after the diagnosis of a patient’s level of pain, their ability to carry out daily activities, and any disability issues related to back pain. Patients seeking chiropractic care will also have to share their medical history and have tests and X-rays to get to the root of the problem.

After everything has been checked, your chiropractor will plan a treatment program for you, which may include one or more chiropractic methods such as massage, acupuncture, rehabilitative exercise, ultrasound, heat and ice therapy and more. Chiropractic treatment may require many sessions before you see the effects of the treatments.

An experienced and certified chiropractor can make the entire process easy for you. It can be an intimidating and scary feeling to visit a chiropractor for the first time. But the treatment is worth every penny spent so that you can find relief from the pain you have been experiencing.
